Chapter 17

Tierney

The sound of a horn crashed through Tierney’s dreams, and she thrashed in bed. Flashes of a battle long past haunted the endless night. No, only endless in her dreams of a world without sun. The prison realm. Before they’d pushed the darkness from its lands, its fae lived in a perpetual void.

A king, now buried in the ground, appeared before her. Egan. He came for her, wanting her power, needing everything she was, craving it. But she wasn’t alone. Not this time.

She felt him, the little boy who could give her the strength she needed to do what was necessary. Toby.

And then, it was all ripped away, and she was falling farther into a dark abyss, where nothing lived, nothing existed. And the horn still sounded.

“Tia!” A soft voice called to her, and she grasped for it, holding on. “Tia, wake up.”

Her eyes snapped open. She wasn’t in the prison realm, but once again, she wasn’t free. The Vondurian room that served as her gilded cage rose up around her in the dark of night.

“Tia.” Small hands shook her, and she looked up into the face of a princess who could’ve been her friend in a different life.

“What is it?” Rubbing sleep from her eyes, she sat up. “The few hours of sleep I manage are the only times my situation isn’t hopeless, so this better be good.” It was only then she noticed the wild look in Eavha’s eyes. She appeared to have dressed in a hurry this morning, with her shirt untucked from her … were those pants? Tierney had never seen her fellow princess in pants before.

Eavha drew in a breath and ran a hand along the braid that draped over one shoulder. “I … I think the palace is being attacked.”

Well, that was one way to wake a girl up. “What makes you think that?” It was then Tierney heard it again. The horn cut through any doubt. Eavha didn’t think the palace was being attacked. She knew. “Okay, calm down. This place can withstand a siege, right? I’ve seen part of your army. It’s not small.”

“Not usually, no. But my father and Keir took most of the troops to defend the captured Grima palace from attack. They left a day ago.”

No wonder he hadn’t visited her. “Well, that’s unfortunate.” Tierney tried to remain calm, remain reasonable. But all she could think of was another time, another war, one that had threatened to take everything from her. She thought of Toby, missing in the Eldurian streets as she searched for him, frantically calling his name. She’d found him stuck beneath a dead ogre. “I need to get dressed.” She scooted from the bed and hurried to dig through clothes in her armoire, looking for the only non-dress she knew was in there.

The jeans she’d worn through the portal.

Ariella had washed them and put them away just as she’d promised. Sliding them up her legs made Tierney feel a bit of home for the first time.
